(10) the ‘leader of the free world’ is permitted to publish daily propaganda and denigrate critical social institutions and journalistic outlets. If anyone else does something like this and is reported, they are generally removed. The inconsistency is laughable.

11 May 2020

(9) Twitter should see itself less as an advertising business and more of a public service. Following Facebook down the rabbit hole for daily usage metrics has taken what was once a vibrant communications platform and transformed it into a toxic hell-stew where…

11 May 2020

(8) I’ll be honest: I deleted my accounts on @Facebook and @instagram because of their disrespect of their users. The only reasons that I stay on Twitter are because the people I follow are important to my work and research and that I can still use third-party apps.

11 May 2020

(7) This has been really disappointing, considering that the developers who make these apps have fostered enthusiastic communities who are arguably the foundation of Twitter’s user base. Instead, Twitter pursues ad revenue, daily active users and mainstream news consumption.

11 May 2020

(6) It’s a much calmer environment to engage with content and follow your friends. The issue here, however, is that Twitter removed various APIs for notifications and likes, along with the lack of any group messaging, in order to discourage use of these apps.

11 May 2020

(5) To avoid annoyances, I use third-party apps on my devices, such as @Twitterrific and Chirp. With their chronological, ad-free feeds and the ability to muffle and mute various keywords and users, they take all the controversial, noisy elements of Twitter out of the picture.

11 May 2020

(4) Ads are intrusive and they rarely have anything to do with what I’m actually interested in. I’ve tweeted about this numerous times: I would happily pay Twitter a subscription fee to have a chronological, ad-free feed.

11 May 2020

(3) which frankly has tarnished the entire experience. In this survey, I had to tick a box that asked whether I wanted more or less tailored advertising on Twitter; the fact is that I would prefer absolutely no advertising on Twitter at all.

11 May 2020

(2) I have been an enthusiastic Twitter user since 2010. What I loved about it when I joined was the focus on communication with other human beings. Over time, I have witnessed a shift in emphasis to advertisements and discovering news and stories (out of chronological order),

(1) Thank you, @Twitter, for the chance to complete a survey about your service. I thought that I would share my response to your final question (as a thread) on what I would change about the service if I had a magic wand:

@tedmitew #Futura

11 May 2020

@JasonMendeloff Great question! Mine are @NetNewsWire, Safari, Messages and Camera. The first is because it’s my main way of reading news, Safari and Messages are two of my most used apps (thanks, Screen Time) and I love quick camera access beyond the lock screen and Control Centre.

@tedmitew @ItsBonnieMaree I suppose what I find more bothersome than the creepiness factor is the destruction of whatever ‘natural’ ambience is left. Recreational/relaxing spaces should be an escape from technology.

10 May 2020

@tedmitew @ItsBonnieMaree It’s good to hear that there’s some thought before introducing new technology.

10 May 2020

@ItsBonnieMaree @tedmitew Yeah no thanks… these things are hardly a necessity. Cylons/Terminators/Sentinels/Replicants in the waiting…

10 May 2020

@tedmitew I find this a little bit troubling.

09 May 2020

@gruber @BradEllis @dlawson @brentsimmons @benthompson I wonder if @dougthomas31 could identify which version of Futura it is…

09 May 2020

@ReneeMiddlemost You have good taste! Haha I watched it over and over again as a kid with my family and just showed it to my wife a couple of weeks ago. She loved it too. 😀

09 May 2020

@ReneeMiddlemost Not mother…?

Thank you @paulca and @imyke for a fantastic live chat on The Green Room. You provided great insights for the community and the video stream was executed really nicely. Glad to be able to participate! 😀

@ljpuk Nice update! I agree that it’s better to slow down and focus on one thing (or at least fewer things)… not that I always practise that idea myself.

@BradEllis @benthompson @gruber I’m glad that you shared the fact that you designed the artwork. It is instantly appealing and rests somewhere between nostalgic and new. Very cool

@danbenjamin To me, it’s all about how it’s delivered. If it’s through RSS and can be added to any player with an accessible feed, in general it is a podcast—whether free or priced with a membership. If it is exclusive to a service, it may be like a podcast only in terms of its style.

08 May 2020

@gruber @benthompson Love it! Already increased my subscription… I’m excited to see where this goes. The cover artwork is also great.
